Türkiye is located within the Alpine–Himalayan Orogenic Belt, one of the world’s richest geological regions for natural stone, including marble, travertine, limestone, and onyx. This unique geological formation has created an extraordinary variety of natural stones, making Türkiye one of the world’s leading suppliers. As the homeland of natural stone, Türkiye has inspired stone architecture for more than 12,000 years. Its unique geography and geological history have placed it at the crossroads of civilizations since prehistoric times. Since around 2000 BC, its high-quality natural stones have been extracted from numerous ancient quarries, many of which remain active today and continue to supply the global market.

The Turkish natural stone industry offers many advantages, including abundant reserves, decades of industry experience, advanced production technologies, a strategic location with easy access to international shipping routes, and one of the world’s widest selections of natural stone colours, patterns, and textures.

Let’s take a closer look at what makes Turkish natural stone unique.
NATURAL RESOURCES

Türkiye is located in one of the world’s oldest marble-producing regions, with a natural stone tradition spanning more than 4,000 years, beginning on Marmara Island, one of the earliest and longest continuously operating marble production centres.
According to estimates published by Turkish geological and industry institutions, Türkiye’s marble reserves exceed 13.9 billion tonnes (approximately 5.1 billion m³), making the country one of the world’s richest natural stone regions (MTA).
Türkiye offers one of the world’s richest natural stone collections, with 150+ stone types and 650+ colours and patterns. The country’s principal natural stone varieties include crystalline limestone (marble), limestone, travertine, onyx, conglomerate, breccia, and igneous rocks such as granite, syenite, diabase, diorite, and serpentine (IMIB).
Today, Türkiye plays an important role in the global natural stone market, with Turkish stone companies exporting to around 200 countries. The sector has expanded significantly since 2004, with processed marble exports reaching approximately US$1.5 billion in 2022. According to 2025 statistics, Türkiye exported more than US$2 billion worth of natural stone products, representing a 7.2% increase over the previous year, with processed stone accounting for nearly 68% of total exports .

PRODUCTION CAPACITIES

Following China, India, and Italy, Türkiye ranks fourth globally in the breadth of its natural stone production. The sector comprises approximately 1,500 active quarries, 2,000 factories, and more than 9,000 workshops (Ministry of Trade). Nearly 25% of these facilities are highly integrated, large-scale plants, while more than half, although moderate in size, are standardized, well organized through associations and unions, and equipped with advanced, fully automated machinery. Approximately 90% of the quarries are located in western Anatolia, primarily in the Aegean and Marmara Regions.
PRODUCTION QUALITY

Türkiye combines advanced production technologies, modern manufacturing methods, and skilled craftsmanship to produce natural stone products that meet international quality standards. Equipped with state-of-the-art processing facilities, Turkish manufacturers can deliver both standard and customized products for a wide range of architectural and construction projects.
EXPERIENCE IN APPLICATION

Processed natural stone is widely used in construction and architectural design for interior and exterior cladding, flooring, paving, stairs, countertops, vanities, sinks, fireplaces, columns, balustrades, monuments, gravestones, sculptures, fountains, and other structural and decorative applications. Many Turkish manufacturers also provide cut-to-size fabrication and installation services for projects both domestically and internationally, giving them valuable expertise in meeting the technical and aesthetic requirements of diverse applications.

PRODUCTION TYPE
Natural stone is processed into a wide variety of products, including slabs, tiles, mosaics, pavers, steps, decorative items, accessories, and custom-made products for architectural and interior applications. Many factories specialize in specific product categories, while others offer a broader range of production. Although it may not always be possible to source every product required for a project from a single manufacturer or region, Türkiye’s extensive production network makes it possible to obtain all required products through different suppliers.
